Based on the physical design of the plugs and ports the main three different types of the USB cable are:
USB Type-A
USB Type B
USB Type C
You can easily distinguish them by their appearance. The most common USB type we could find on our phone cable is USB Type-A, Micro USB, USB Type-C, Lightning(iPhone).
When we describe the cable, we always said it's a C to C cable, C to lightning cable, etc., it indicates the USB types of the cable, one for the charger port, another for your phone port. Usually, if it's a Type-A to Type-C cable, we call it USB-C cable.

In comparison with the old Type-A, micro B, micro A connector, the most obvious advantage of USB C is that you can easily plugin because it's reversible, just like Apple's lightning connector. And the plug can be inserted on either end and it will work. Besides, it's small and can support various new USB standard like USB 3.1 and USB power delivery (USB PD), which means you can charge and sync at a higher speed. So more and more phone & laptop manufacturers use their USB-C ports as their charging ports including Apple, Google, Samsung, etc.
